Trump Team Gives The Extra Push In Congress For Ivanka's Child Care Proposal

Proving true earlier expectations that soon to be First Daughter Ivanka Trump's signature issues and causes will become a priority in President-elect Donald Trump's administration, Trump transition officials reportedly held a conference call with House Ways and Means Committee staff on Thursday to push for Ivanka's childcare reform proposal through a broader tax reform package.

Ivanka's proposal includes a childcare tax credit and six weeks maternity leave protection. Estimates put the cost of Ivanka's proposal at $300 billion. As such, the Trump transition team believes that the proposal stand better chances of being approved if passed through broader tax reform efforts.

The transition team's phone call to Ways and Means Staffers is aimed at sending a clear message that the proposal is a big priority of the incoming administration, and to request the concerned committee to start finding ways to fund the proposal to make the budget neutral. Trump team officials wish to source funds from other programs and through tax reform to pay for the childcare and maternity leave proposal.

Maternity and childcare concerns were prominently included in Trump's presidential platforms and he credited it to Ivanka's push for the issues. Trump's child care policy proposal aims to make it mandatory for companies to provide six weeks of compensation for maternity leave, reforming the tax code to allow deductions for child care expenses, and expanded earned income tax credit for low income families.

Ivanka was reported last month making calls to Republican members of Congress to start work for child care protection.

Ivanka has tendered her resignation from the Trump Organization and her fashion business this week to focus in settling her young family as they move to Washington from New York. Her husband, Jared Kushner, has been appointed as Senior Advisor to Trump and would focus on Middle East affairs. While there has been no official appointment or announcement on Ivanka's would- be role under her father's presidency, it is widely acknowledged that she will likely play the de facto first lady as the low-profile Melania Trump will stay behind in New York to take care of son Barron until the remainder of the school year. It was also reported last month that Ivanka would like to take up signature causes and being a working mom to three young children, the issue of childcare remains on top of her priorities.
