Censorship? Daily Caller Fired Editor For Publishing Yiannopoulos Column

Was it a case of censorship? Conservative site Daily Caller strangely fired its opinion editor after the publication of a piece written by known right-wing Milo Yiannopoulos.

Rob Mariani had been fired from his post, and the move was confirmed to media by the Caller’s editor-in-chief Geoffrey Ingersoll.

The news of the firing came out following a Facebook post by the controversial Yiannopoulos discussing his all too brief stint as a columnist for the site.

On his Facebook post, Yiannopoulos wrote: “Sad news: The Daily Caller has caved to pressure and cancelled my weekly column after a day, claiming, falsely, they never planned to run weekly contributions from me. The Daily Caller is also throwing its opinion editor Rob Mariani under the bus: we are told he has just been fired. I’m disappointed, to put it mildly.”’

CNN’s Oliver Darcy also talked about it on his Twitter page.

Yiannopoulus’ piece came out on Friday and even made waves on social media, especially on Twitter. Yiannopoulus slammed actor Kevin Spacey in his column over allegations that the famous celebrity made sexual advances towards a young teenager.

Milo also shared details of his previous arrangement with the now fired opinion editor for him to write 600-800 word weekly column for the site.

The Daily Caller also edited Milo’s column and clearly deleted the line that says Milo would be having a new weekly column with the site.

Yiannopoulos is, of course best remembered for being a former editor at the Breitbart News website. He resigned there in February after videos resurfaced allegedly showing him expressing support for some instances of sex between adults and minors.

Oliver Darcy also shared on Twitter that Daiy Caller’s editor-in-chief confirmed to him about the firing of Mariani but that it was supposedly because he did not convey properly the arrangement he made with Yiannopoulos regarding his weekly column.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Daily Caller editor-in-chief told me opinion editor was fired for not properly conveying deal he made w/Milo <a href="https://t.co/43y8AEMc0N">https://t.co/43y8AEMc0N</a></p>&mdash; Oliver Darcy (@oliverdarcy) <a href="https://twitter.com/oliverdarcy/status/926941504463097856?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 4, 2017</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Mariani also shared to Darcy that the idea for Milo’s weekly column actually came from a top editor and that it was met enthusiastically by Ingersoll. He also said that his section with Milo’s column generated record high traffic.
