Australian Miss World Contestant Accident Ruled...

A 25-year-old French tourist, Miss Cindy Gonin, who drove on the wrong side of the road when visiting Australia in 2016 and thus caused a head-on collision with Miss Elyse Miller-Kennedy, received a suspended two-year sentence for her fault in the accident which caused the loss of life of the Australian Miss World Contestant.

The car of the 17-year-old was rolled over after the accident, crushing her legs and chest. She had also suffered significant head injuries and multiple fractured bones. The multitude of wounds caused her death just nine days later.

Judge Shanahan admitted today that Miss Elyse Miller-Kennedy was stolen from her family by the accident: "she was only 17 years of age at the time and had an extremely bright future ahead of her, nothing I say or do can lessen that impact."

The lawyer for Miss Gonin, Mr Michael Dalton pleaded with the court by stating that his client had suffered "significant psychological and physical injuries," adding that they “acknowledged the immeasurable loss suffered by Elyse's family and the ongoing impact her death is clearly having upon them."

Miss Gonin received a two-year sentence, wholly suspended, with Judge Shanahan explaining that there were circumstances that caused him to rule this way: "the impact itself has had significant consequences for you, both physically and mentally. What persuades me to allow you to remain in the community is the physical and mental impacts that this offence has had also upon you."
