Video - Update - 335 Dead in Iran-Iraq Earthquake

As my colleague Philip already wrote overnight, the earthquake in Iran was indeed a sign of global seismic activity to come as a few hours after the 7.2 quake that struck the Iranian - Iraqi border towns (which have now left 335 dead already), a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan.

That tremor rumbled south-east of the city of Kamaish, on the country’s Pacific coast, according to the US Geological Survey.

And another hour later Costa Rica was also rocked by a strong 6.5 magnitude quake which knocked out power lines and has threatened rock slides. People were said to have been seen rushing outside in panic overnight as items were knocked from shelves in the disturbance.

However, those quakes (in Costa Rica and Japan) were quite strong, they did happen mostly off the coastline (Japan) or far underground (Costa Rica) and therefore have not caused much damage or casualties.

Not so in Iran where authorities keep updating the figure of total persons that have perished in the disaster.

It now stands at 335 dead and over 4,000 wounded at the time of writing but is expected to go much higher afterward.

The quake was even felt in the Iraqi capital Bagdad where Ms Majida Ameer, a mother of three told: "I was sitting with my kids having dinner and suddenly the building was just dancing in the air. I thought at first that it was a huge bomb. But then I heard everyone around me screaming: 'Earthquake!'"

Rescuers keep searching for dozens trapped under rubble in the mountainous area, but given the circumstances they are very hard to get to.
