Dallas - Illegal Tried To Run Over Police Officer To Evade Capture

The man who ran over and injured an off-duty officer outside a Dallas nightclub early Monday before he was shot also happened to be in the country illegally. Immigration officials made the confirmation. The suspect has been identified as Eduardo Gonzalez-Rios, 29. He has been charged with aggravated assault against a public servant.

Police say Sr. Orporal Ed Lujan suffered numerous broken bones and a lacerated scalp as a result of the attack. Gonzalez-Rios ran over him twice outside the Kalua Discotheque in the 2400 block of W. Northwest Highway. Lujan was in uniform at that time, working an off-duty job at the nightclub.

The attack prompted other officers, Sgt. Shannon Browning and Sr. Corporal Antonio Barrientos to fire at the suspect. Lujan is recovering and appears to be in good spirits. Two funds have been set up to help with his medical expenses.

Gonzalez-Rios was wounded in the arm and released from the hospital Tuesday. He is now detained on immigration hold in the Dallas County Jail.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Carl Rusnok says Gonzalez-Rios has been deported from the U.S. three times already. ICE officials first encountered the illegal immigrant near Harlingen in November 2004. He was issued an expedited removal and deported to Mexico the same day. It is now unclear when and where Gonzalez-Rios entered the U.S. again.
