Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has publicly backed legislation to encompass Trump's "four pillars" of an immigration overhaul.
The plan includes building the wall, ending the visa lottery program and imposing curbs on visas for the families of legal immigrants who would otherwise gain citizenship simply because they are related.
"This proposal has my support and during this week of fair debate I believe it deserves support of every senator who’s ready to move beyond making points and actually making a law," McConnell said. The final "pillar" in the immigration plan would be protecting around 1.8 million Dreamers who were brought illegally to the United States as children.
This fourth pillar is the key to getting democrats to accept the legislation who have been campaigning for the Dreamers in hopes of granting them citizenship. It represents a compromise between Republicans and Democrats in Washington that will hopefully allow the reform of U.S. immigration policy to proceed.
Federal judges from New York and and California blocked the Trump administration from rescinding on March 5 former President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program. The program protected those who signed up from deportation.
The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to make a ruling and could announce as soon as Friday afternoon whether it will hear the appeal taken up by the Trump administration against the federal judges rulings blocking them from rescinding DACA. Republican Senator Tom Cotton called Trump's immigration plan a "best and final offer".
However, Trump tweeted early Tuesday, "Negotiations on DACA have begun." Perhaps he is willing to negotiate the immigration plan further. If Trump doesn't get this wall build, he is going to lose a huge amount of support. After all, his promise to build the wall was the focal point of his campaign.
