Mangold recently wrote and directed Logan which brought an end to the Wolverine centered series which served as standalone films focused on the clawed superhero from the X-men. The reveal of the new standalone film comes on the eve of the release of the second Star Wars standalone film, Solo: A Star Wars Story. Solo is the second standalone film following Rogue One: A Star Wars Story which released in 2016, a year after The Force Awakens and a year before The Last Jedi.

If Disney's sights are set on a film focusing on the ominous man under the helmet, there probably couldn't be a better choice to write and direct it. Mangold's latest film, Logan, was very well received by fans and movie critics alike and earned an astonishing 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.1 on IMBD. Since Disney's purchase of the Star Wars license, fans have criticized the company for using the Star Wars universe to push identity politics and a social justice warrior-feminist agenda. The company chose to insert blatant, on-the-nose political statements and characters for the sake of checking off diversity checklists instead of focusing on creating an exciting, fun-filled escape from the real world which is what the original films represented.

The character Boba Fett was first introduced in 1980's Empire Strikes Back and then later in 1983's Return of the Jedi. The character is a merciless bounty hunter who delivered Han Solo to the slug-like crime lord Jabba the Hutt. Boba Fett was only featured in a few brief scenes, and the man under the helmet wasn't revealed until the prequel series of the early 2000's. Mangold boasts an impressive resume consisting of hits such as Walk the Line, Knight and Day, 3:10 to Yuma, and Logan.
