Northern Ireland – Explosive Devices Thrown At House Of Sinn Féin Leader (Video)

In a remarkable turn of events after a long period of peace in Northern Ireland, explosive devices have been thrown at the residences of two well-known Republican leaders. The first one targeted Sinn Féin President Mr Gerry Adams, the second was aimed at activist Bobby Storey. Belfast Police are investigating the attacks and urge anyone with information to come forward.

The now 69-year-old Mr Gerry Adams was the leader of Sinn Féin, the political party seen by many as the political helm of the IRA (Irish Republican Army), for 34 years in parliament. During the bombing attacks and the violence of the 1980s he survived many attacks on his life, including one where loyalist paramilitaries tried to shoot him.

He is still one of the most recognizable political figures in the UK.

Sinn Féin spokesman Mr Gerry Kelly “slammed those responsible for attacks on the homes this evening of Gerry Adams and Bobby Storey”, adding that “these were reprehensible and cowardly attacks. Grandchildren were in the driveway of Adams' home minutes before the attack."

Rival politicians were quick to condemn the attacks. Social Democratic and Labour Party leader Mr Colum Eastwood said the acts were nothing less than "disgraceful".

“The SDLP unequivocally condemns the disgraceful attacks on the homes of Gerry Adams and Bobby Storey. There is absolutely no place in our society for such mindless actions. Thankfully no one was injured. It is important, at moments like this, that we all stand together against those who want to drag us back to the past. They should be left in no doubt, it will not work."

The events follow several nights of violence in Northern Ireland which the police have blamed on the "New IRA" in Londonderry.
