World Cup – Belgium Beats England 2-0 To Take The Bronze (Video)

Whereas tomorrow football fans will be watching a waiting game during the final, Belgium and England today served up an open play which resulted in a win for Belgium after a quick first-half goal from Thomas Meunier and an Eden Hazard counter which made it 2-0.

England had hoped to go further at this world cup but overall the performance of this young team means that in two years from now, at the next European tournament, they will be a force to be reckoned with. Novice manager Gareth Southgate has been able to mold a team out of these youngsters who certainly on corners and free kicks were extremely dangerous. They also exit with having the top scorer, the so-called ‘golden boot’ of the tournament in captain Harry Kane (unless something incredible happens tomorrow).

Meanwhile, for Belgium’s golden generation, this was (almost) the last chance to prove itself. Most of the base players in the defense and middle-field have passed the age of 30 and it is uncertain whether they’ll make the next tournament. Furthermore, it is unclear whether head coach Roberto Martinez will stay on as one can assume many top European clubs will want to hire him after the tactics he drilled into the team.

The highlight of the tournament for the Belgians, the stunning win against Brazil will have convinced his fiercest critics.

The match started with a quick attack by Belgium that was able to score via PSG winger Thomas Meunier who outran England defender Danny Rose. 1-0 after four minutes and for the rest of the first half, it was Belgium that dictated what was happening. The English never looked like they would get back into it. As half-time drew to a close, it already looked like unless manager Southgate would make a chance the game would finish in this manner as well.

The second half indeed started in the same manner with Belgium controlling and England looking for a chance on the break.

But when Eric Dyer was able to pass Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with a sublime lob and Tottenham defender Toby Alderweild had to save on the line for the Belgians in the 70th minute, it was all hands on deck.

Of course, this also meant the English left open spaces in the back, and ten minutes before time Eden Hazard was able to score the 2-0 on a sublime play.

The result also means that a certain Belgian electro chain has to pay out a whole bunch of free TV’s as the team has now scored 16 goals overall. Luckily they were insured … by an English company (see our related coverage).
