A dramatic incident that took place on I-45 in downtown Houston early Tuesday saw a tire fly off a pickup truck before landing into oncoming traffic, claiming the life of one driver.
The unfortunate accident blocked all northbound lanes of the Pierce Elevated/I-45 near Bagby for about three hours. That's where investigators and wrecker drivers were looking over the victim's SUV.
The Houston Police Department revealed that the incident happened just before 6 a.m. when the tire broke off from an older Ford F-150 pickup traveling in the southbound lanes near San Jacinto. The tire bounced and flew over the middle concrete barrier into the northbound lanes striking another vehicle.
Air 11 views showed that the older Ford Explorer was hit in the front windshield on the driver's side. Police authorities said that the male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The pickup that ditched the tire came to a halt on the other side of the freeway on the shoulder. Police say the driver remained at the scene from where he was questioned and released. The investigation is still underway. However, the freeway has since been reopened.
