UK - Former EU President Warns ''No-Deal Brexit Will Break Up Britain''

Former EU President Mr. Herman Van Rompuy warned that the UK government’s choice for a so-called ‘no-deal Brexit,’ a threat made by the Tory government of Ms. Theresa May should no agreement with the EU be forthcoming, would result in a possible breakup of the United Kingdom itself, stating that failure to reach an EU-UK solution over Brexit would increase pressure for Scottish independence.

Mr. Van Rompuy: “The no-deal issue is not just a problem for the UK or Brussels.”

The former EU council president until 2014 referred to Scottish First Minister Ms. Nicola Sturgeon, who last week stated that a No-Deal Brexit would be an “unmitigated disaster”.

In Scotland, some 62 percent of the voting public wanted to remain in the EU during the Brexit referendum.

Mr. Van Rompuy, currently retired but still a major fan of the EU-project, claimed that he expected the UK to organize new elections soon, stating: “If there is no House of Commons support for no deal, then you are very close to new elections.”

“If you have new elections, then article 50 (the legal process for Britain’s EU exit, red.) will have to be postponed because it will not be clear that you will have a government – or a government with a programme.”
