Two American Women Raped In Jamaica Hotel Before Turning Gun On Attacker

A couple of American girls wanted to get away from their hometown of Detroit and experience a vacation in Jamaica. The girls checked in at a 5-star hotel and kicked back to relax. One of them was Facetiming a friend on the balcony while the other was listening to music on her bed. Before they knew it, five days had gone by and they had become comfortable with their lodgings.

That is, until 11:15 p.m. Thursday when a crazed rapist crawled up the side of their hotel and up onto their balcony. The attacker barged into their second-floor room at the Hotel Riu Reggae. The unnamed gunman raped both women at gunpoint over a period of about 15 minutes, according to one of the victims.

After the 15 minutes of rape, one of the women managed to get a hold of the rapist's own weapon and turned it on him. She fired at least two times hitting him as he jumped off the balcony and fled. Well done to this woman for successfully getting some rounds into her attacker with his own weapon, she likely saved both her and her friend's life.

"At night, it really haunts me. All I see is his eyes," the girl said who shot the suspect. "I just want to know why." Besides wanting to know why she said she wants justice for having to walk through the hotel half-naked after she had just been sexually assaulted and placing a gun on the counter. "I said, 'There was a gunman in my room. He raped and robbed me and my friend. And I took the gun and I shot him," the women told the front desk clerk who quickly called authorities.

Montego Bay police say the suspect is a 24-year-old employee of the hotel named Scott Dowe. He worked at Hotel Riu Reggae just three days before he raped the two American women. Dowe worked as a dancer for an entertainment company that had just performed at the hotel three days prior to the assault. The 24-year-old was arrested on Friday after he checked himself into a local hospital and medical staff reported him to police. He was arrested and is police custody but formal charges have yet to be filed. Dowe appeared in court Tuesday morning to face charges for the sexual assaults.

The manager at the Hotel Riu Reggae, Frank Sondern, declined to comment saying the investigation is still ongoing. Lee Bailey, a police civic committee chair in St. James, Jamaica said he is concerned about the hotel's background screening procedures and believes the hotel didn't properly screen Dowe. "We have very strict rules as to who works in hotels," Bailey said. "Anybody who wants to invest in Jamaica must abide by and respect those regulations. I’ve never heard of this happening before."

The sexual assault victims have both returned to Detroit but the experience has left them reeling and demanding justice. They say they were not contacted by the U.S. Embassy until four days after returning home. The victim who managed to get Dowe's gun and shoot him is a medical lab operator and the mother of a 3-year-old girl. She was in Jamaica last week celebrating her 33rd birthday with her friend.

The other victim is a healthcare employee and both women say they had planned the trip for months. They each forked out $1,200 for an all-inclusive, five-night vacation at the Hotel Riu Reggae on the beachfront. The victim who shot the suspect described the night in detail saying, "It was about 10:45 p.m. when the 33-year-old woman started Facetiming with a friend while out on the balcony. At about 11:15, she hung up on the friend and went into her hotel room. In a matter of seconds, a gunman stormed into their room through the balcony door."

"He said, 'Where’s the money?'" Both women replied that they had none and the gunman got louder saying "What the fuck you mean you don’t have any money?" The scared American tourists threw their credit cards on the bed and offered to take the gunman to an ATM. That is when he cocked the gun prompting a scream from both women. "Oh my God! Please don’t kill us!" They said. "We've got kids."

The intruder then ordered them to turn the lights off and said if they refused his orders he would kill them. He then forced both women to get on their knees in the dark hotel and ordered them one at a time to give him oral sex while the other was forced to watch. He then switched the victims and raped the other while the first one to be raped watched the same happen to her friend. Dowe made a mistake when he put his gun down on the bed, seeing an opportunity, one of the women began struggling.

"I grabbed the gun and started shooting," the victim said describing that there were only two shots and both were aimed at his arm. He clearly didn't expect to be shot so he ran out of the door and leaped off the 2nd story balcony. The hotel seemed like it was just another day in the park for them and they offered the girls a refund for the trip.

A Michigan based attorney named Ed Zelenak who serves as legal counsel to the St. James Police Civic Committee in Jamaica said he was surprised to learn of what had taken place. "It's encouraging to see one of the victims engage in self-defense and hold her ground," Zelenak said.

Hey Ricardo, there were only 2 rounds in the pistol. The Dee-troit News reported that, along with showing the victims’ hands and describing the rape scenario like tabloids would. Mistake-a in Jamaica
