Brexit – Tories Are ‘Stuck In The Middle’ With EU

UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s ‘bataan death march’ this week was an excruciating watch for anyone on the European continent.

The whole of Europe has been glued to their favorite newspaper updating them about the absolute mess coming out of London as most political commentators try to make sense of what has happened in the UK Parliament after the Brexit agreement (a 585-page shocker) was presented.

The negotiations seem to have become a daily soap opera as no one expected the British Tory party to fight amongst themselves for two years on end ever since the Brexit vote took place.

Prime Minister Theresa May has now lost 5 cabinet members (among whom 2 ministers) in one week and is under mounting pressure from her own party to resign or adapt the agreement she has made with the EU.

She is, however, fighting for dear life. She needs to present her draft Brexit agreement for a vote to Parliament at a certain point before heading to Brussels on 25 November but all political onlookers are now quite certain she cannot gain a majority.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">It really is not Brexit.<a href="https://t.co/cBKd16h47U">https://t.co/cBKd16h47U</a></p>&mdash; Jacob Rees-Mogg (@Jacob_Rees_Mogg) <a href="https://twitter.com/Jacob_Rees_Mogg/status/1063782860170149889?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 17, 2018</a></blockquote>

Two years ago, Ms. May was able to follow-up after former PM David Cameron left because the alpha males in her own party, Mr. Boris Johnson and Mr. Michael Gove, thought it was more important to block each other rather than to allow either of them to take over.

Back then, Ms. May won the leadership election because she could profile herself as the decent, moderate alternative. She seemed to be the best guarantee that the Brexit would not result in a total catastrophe. And yet it now threatens to turn out just like that.

Ms. May is certainly partly to blame for that herself, having done everything wrong in the negotiations with the EU. During the first few months, a lot of time was lost because she did not want to say which kind of Brexit her party preferred, as it was torn between so-called Brexiteers and Remainers. And thus, she said mostly nothing.

PM May never had the authority to silence the tough Brexiteers as they knew that nearly half the Tory party backed them. And when she lost the party’s absolute majority in the elections last year, they only got noisier.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">On Thursday, Theresa May claimed her Brexit deal was in the &quot;national interest&quot;.<br>Here&#39;s why that&#39;s not true 👇 <a href="https://t.co/MnNuspBBV9">pic.twitter.com/MnNuspBBV9</a></p>&mdash; The Labour Party (@UKLabour) <a href="https://twitter.com/UKLabour/status/1063764186088361985?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 17, 2018</a></blockquote>

Those elections made it painfully clear that the Conservatives could only attract the older, white Briton. Voters under 50 did not vote for them anymore. The party seems to become more and more a party of the past.

But the Brexiteers clearly think otherwise. Mr. Jacob Rees-Mogg and Mr. Boris Johnson are convinced that the United Kingdom will once again flourish economically if it can conclude trade agreements with the whole world.

And that is exactly what Ms. May’s Brexit deal does not allow.

As long as the UK remains in the customs union with the EU, something that could easily be extended for another three years, it cannot conclude such trade agreements.

Thus, until the Brexiteers are able to force Ms. May out, they remain ‘stuck in the middle with’ the EU.
