A 33-year-old man armed with kitchen knives attacked a police patrol in the center of the Belgian capital Brussels this morning
The events took place at 5.30 am next to the police headquarters near the Brussels centre. "The officer is injured, but not in any immediate danger," police spokeswoman Ilse Van de Keere confirmed afterwards.

An investigation has been opened into attempted murder in a terrorist context.

Several witnesses heard the man, who is of Muslim origin, yelled Allahu Akhbar as he stormed towards the police patrol, but the prosecutor's office does not yet want to assume a terrorist motive just yet.

"We do not yet have any clarity about the perpetrator's motive," says parquet spokeswoman Ine Van Wymersch, as "the man could not yet be interrogated."

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Security and Home Affairs Jan Jambon (of the ruling Flemish N-VA political party) already declared that the perpetrator is not known for terrorism. "He is not in the OCAD databases and is not known for terrorism at the police."
According to local press, the perpetrator was Issam T., who had only just been released after imprisonment and was known for a series of violent robberies with violence.
In 2014 he was imprisoned after an attempted manslaughter. Police are working from the assumption that he may have radicalized in prison.
<b>“Cowardly attack”</b>
Minister Jambon said that once again "the Brussels police falls victim to another cowardly attack."
Jambon also sent a tweet in support of the police forces: "Attack on police station Brussels. The perpetrator was shot. A policeman has been injured. The public prosecutor's office investigates the case. Every day, agents from our police zone, as well as from other zones, ensure that our citizens are safe. They deserve more than ever our respect and our support. "
Belgium has seen repeated attacks by terrorists in the past two years. The Brussels airport and metro were simultaneously bombed on 22 March 2016, killing 32 people.
