TX - Report Reveals Shocking Child Abuse Cases in Childcare Centers

A report made by the Austin-American Statesman published on Thursday makes the shocking revelation that Texas day care facilities in the last decade have been marred by neglect and abuse. The investigation goes to say that more than 450 children were sexually abused while 88 others died due to abuse and neglect.

One of the factors could be that many childcare centers in Texas are operating illegally. The problem has been a grave one that in 2013, the Legislature approved a budget for a 30-person investigative unit of the Department of Family and Protective Services to crackdown on illegal centers. Those that are operating under the radar have higher incidents of abuse and neglect as compared to the centers that are duly registered with the state.

A number of proposed solutions in addressing the problem are being considered. There is, for one, the proposal on the legislative level to require surveillance cameras in all childcare facilities.

Some parents, however, have expressed their apprehension with such a proposal as some said they will feel a certain discomfort with the idea that other parents will have access to a video feed that may involve their child engaged in a group activity.

Childcare workers may also feel additional burden and stress with the thought that they are being watched, too, through the surveillance cameras.

Another lawmaker-proposed idea is to mandate a study that would determine whether Texas’ staff-to-child ratios in daycare has an effect on having a more dangerous childcare environment. As it is, Texas’ ratio is one of the highest in the country.

David Brown, a professor of early childhood education at Texas A&M University-Commerce, recommends for his part that all childcare facilities hold liability insurance, irrespective of the size of the operation.

Gov. Greg Abbott has promised to address the issue during the upcoming Legislative session. His spokesperson said the governor does not tolerate child abuse or neglect in the state.

It should be a crime to operate a daycare center without a license. Each daycare provider should have a degree in child development and should be monitored by child protective services. What are these people thinking, these are children, the future of our country.
