Germany’s Merkel Issues “Grandstanding” Statements On US- North Korea Rift

German Chancellor Angela Merkel continues her attempts to take on the self-assumed role as the supposed “new leader “of the free world as she involves herself in the U.S. and North Korea issue. She said on Friday that she didn’t see a military solution to the growing conflict between the U.S. and the Asian rogue state.

Merkel reacted to President Donald Trump’s latest statements on the North Korea issue and expressed anew her strong disagreement with the American leader. She said: “I believe that, am convinced that an escalation of rhetoric will not contribute to a solution of this conflict. I do not see a military solution to this conflict.“

Instead, Merkel proposes another measure. She said: “Rather, I see continuous work, like we have seen in the U.N. Security Council with members with resolutions in view of North Korea, and above all very close cooperation with affected countries, especially the United States and China, but also South Korea, of course, Japan.”

Trump in the past has criticized the weaknesses and limitations of the U.N. in containing the aggression of North Korea, and the lack of response of the international community.

Merkel tried to bring Germany into the issue playing the role of the “good cop”.

She said: “Germany will be intensely involved with potential solutions that we see, not of a military manner. But the escalation of rhetoric I hold as the wrong answer.” The U.S. and North Korea have been escalating their exchange of hostile rhetoric lately.

President Trump even issued a strong warning to Pyongyang on Tuesday and said that if it continues to threaten the U.S., North Korea “will be met with fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before.”

North Korea for its part retaliated with a specific threat, saying they would attack waters around the U.S. territory of Guam. U.S. close ally and North Korea neighbor, Japan, has said that it is ready to defend Guam from such attacks.

President Trump issued another huge message to North Korea in a tweet on Friday. He said: “Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely. Hopefully, Kim Jong Un find another path!

Trump also retweeted the U.S. Pacific Command, declaring that they were prepared to respond if Guam is attacked.

In a statement more than a month ago, curiously, Germany has dropped the word “friend” in describing its relations with the U.S.
