The Senate Outlawed GMO Labeling Nationwide: While You Were Distracted By The US Election

The 2016 presidential election was the main event that every citizen was pre-occupied about throughout the year, this diverted attention from the Senate which was busy making null and void laws that demand the labelling of GMO foods.

The fatal effects of GMO’s cannot be ignored, this Genetically Modified Organisms have mild effects when consumed. Such include the increase cancer risk, silence human genes, cause gastrointestinal problems and other harmful effects to the environment.

The lack of safety testing on GMOs has provided inaccurate information concerning the same. This is because the studies are conducted over short durations of time and therefore they show the GMOs are safe. However, the truth is that GMOs cause serious problems i.e. tumors.

There are consumers who barely care about the presence of GMOs in their food and hence there ought to be GMO labelling so that consumers can be aware of what is in their food. Several U.S. States have passed GMO labelling such include Maine, Vermont, and Connecticut. In some States, this initiative failed due to opposition against corporations that manufacture such foods.

The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry made a deal known as bipartisan agriculture biotechnology compromise solution. The legislation bans all GMO labeling laws that have been passed by states. The deal was struck while most Americans were distracted by the US election and other issues. The bill clearly indicates that no food will be labeled as containing GMO.

While the media’s attention was focused on the election, President Obama signed and enacted a legislation on the 29th of July after a bill to reauthorize and amend the National Sea Grant College Program Act was voted by Senate on the 7th of July. This was a complete injustice to the state rights since the bill was passed in an undercover manner.
