Toddler Accidentally Kills Himself With Loaded Gun, Then Father Does Too

A man in Columbia, South Carolina has committed suicide following the discovery of his lifeless toddlers body according to police. The father and son died in their home on Truax Lane in Columbia. Officers say the child found a loaded gun inside the home and it managed to go off while he played with it killing the toddler. The mother was home at the time and called 9-11 to report what happened to police.

When the officers responded to the call, they found the boy's father and he was threatening to kill himself after loosing his son. The officers tried to get the distraught man to drop the weapon but he shot himself in the head. The father and son were taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Colombia Police Chief Skip Holbrook said, "Our hearts are heavy at the tremendous loss of life. We have victim advocates assigned to the case to assist the family during this difficult time. This experience has also been emotionally trying for responding officers. They will participate in a debriefing to discuss the incident and receive further support as needed."

Investigators are working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is working to determine the gun's origin and who it belonged to.
