Major Crash? Facebook Down in the U.S. and Europe

There appears to be trouble in social media paradise as thousands of users all over the world reported that popular site Facebook was down on Wednesday morning. Many users even reported that Facebook has completely broken.

There were many who were shockingly greeted with a blank page instead of the familiar Facebook set-up when they visited the site, with nothing loading.Others said that they could only access specific parts of the site or app.

The frustrations continued for those who thought that everything was running smoothly with the site only to be proven wrong when they try to post something, and at which point the site just breaks down.

According to downdetector.com, a website that tracks site issues, problems with Facebook were first encountered around 8:20 a.m. EDT. Reports show the most prevalent issues with Facebook happened in the U.S., Europe and parts of South America.

Nearly 40% of those who reported encountering issues with Facebook said the social media site was completely while 36 % said they also have issues logging in as of 12 p.m. Wednesday.

Facebook admitted that it has received numerous reports and investigating “degraded API performance.”

The social media site came back with an update around 1 p.m. saying the issues were still ongoing. They did not clarify what exactly was causing the problems.

It is rare for the hugely popular and influential site which commands more than a billion followers all over the world to break down. Due to its huge size, any outage can have a dramatic effect, even if it became down for mere moments.

The problems may have mostly taken place in the U.S. and Europe, but that could also be a factor of the timezones. Still there are indications that the problems are happening around the world as well.

Many have taken to other social media sites to report the problems with Facebook.
