Uniformed Deputy Shoots Woman Walking Dog Before Turning Gun On Self

A woman who was bringing her dog inside Friday afternoon when a uniformed Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputy fired multiple shots at her before turning the gun on himself. The police are treating the incident as an attempted murder-suicide and say the officer was identified as Michael DeMarco. Stephanie Slater, a Boynton Beach police spokeswoman, said the victim was walking her dog back home at the Inlet Harbor Club around 8 a.m. when deputy DeMarco fired on her, "He shot her several times and then fatally shot himself."

Slater also confirmed that DeMarco was waiting for the woman to return inside his police car which was registered to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. The woman miraculously survived multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Delray Medical Center where she is in critical but stable condition. Police refuse to identify the woman but investigators have determined the deputy and the victim were in a relationship prior to the events on Friday. Slater said investigators determined the relationship had ended about three weeks before DeMarco tried to kill her before committing suicide.

It is important to understand that most law enforcement are good people who put their lives on the line to protect the rest of us, but it is equally important to remember that even law enforcement are human and crazies will sometimes make their way through the hiring process. This woman saw a uniformed officer which should represent safety and the law abiding individual wearing it but this time the man wearing that uniform tried to take her life.
