Sweden has decided to name a train ‘Trainy McTrainface’ in order to settle a contest in which the public could choose the name of a new express line which will run between Stockholm and Gothenburg.
How did we get here you will ask?
Alright, this is a ‘stoner’ story, so bear with me on this because it’s quite the read.
First of all, if you smoke weed (or marijuana), then nature documentaries are really fun and relaxing to watch. The best nature documentaries (in Europe) are presented by Sir David Attenborough and are called ‘Planet Earth’.
A year ago, some kid in the UK who will remain anonymous, whilst stoned, was watching ‘Planet Earth’ and after the episode hears the BBC announcer say that the British government has decided in honour of Sir David Attenborough’s documentaries to finance a boat which will go and explore the north and south pole. To get the public excited about this boat, they want the viewers to propose the name of the vessel.
So the stoner kid goes onto the internet as one of the first to possibly vote and types in: “Boaty McBoatface”, and then posts this on Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Reddit, whatever you can find, and asks all his friends (and their friends’ friends) to vote for it as well, which they do. The next day, “Boaty McBoatface” has the lead of names to be selected with about 85% of the votes. In the end he wins the public poll but as the British would rather not be made fun of for their boat, they decide to name the boat: the “Sir David Attenborough”. Boring!

A month ago, the Swedish railway company has the same brilliant idea. Why don’t we ask the public how we’re gonna name our new express train between Stockholm and Gothenburg. Of course Sweden also has a lot of young stoners who surf the web and by now the ‘Boaty’ is well known in stoner circles.
First kids to vote choose: ‘Trainy McTrainface’ and then posts this on Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Reddit. As from the next day, well you know the rest of the story now.
As from next month, if you’re in Stockholm train station and you are taking the express to Gothenborg, at least now you know why it is called like that.
