It is the end of August and this time in France for ‘la rentrée,’ the return to work and school. This traditionally is paired with political leaders giving speeches focusing on how they plan to realize their aims in the French parliament.
The traditional centre-right party of former Presidents Sarkozy (2007-2012) and Chirac (1995-2007), now called Les Républicains, chose to make a hard swing right apparently and blatantly copied the discourse of Ms Marie Le Pen’s FN when their chairman, Mr Laurent Wauquiez, not only criticized President Emmanuel Macron for his budgetary choices but also spoke at length about the dangers of ‘mass immigration’.

Mr Wauquiez: “How do we not understand that we are at full capacity in terms of integration and that the mass immigration of today is a cultural menace to European civilizations? The French refuse to become foreigners in their own country.”

Referring to Italy where Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has taken a hard stance against migrant boats and is being rewarded in political polls, Mr Wauquiez stated: “We have to make sure something remains of our civilisation. We shouldn’t let those humanitarian boats enter into European harbours.”

Ms Le Pen, the former Presidential candidate during the 2017 elections who heads the rightwing FN, saw that Les Républicains was aiming for her voter base and responded to Mr Wauquiez’s speech, stating that his party is still paying for migration centres and is partly responsible for the situation France finds itself in today.
The French press was aghast that one of the traditional parties has taken over the language of the FN.
