A young actress has accused French actor Gérard Depardieu of sexually assaulting her. Depardieu denies the accusation "absolutely," according to his lawyer. The accusations were formally leveled against the 69-year-old by a French actress who reported the rape to the police.
Depardieu is one of France's most famous actors and has been in films like Cyrano de Bergerac and Jean de Florette. The 22-year-old accuser says the rape occurred earlier this month at one of the actor's Paris residences.

The accuser has not been publicly identified but gave her statement to Lambesc police in southern France. The actress is also an author and allegedly knew Depardieu before the incident occurred. The actress said through her agent she was "devastated" by the attacks. Depardieu's lawyer Hervé Temime said he was sure his client was innocent of the charges.
"I had a long meeting with Gérard Depardieu and I am absolutely convinced his innocence will be established," Temime said. The actor himself said he was "shaken" by the allegations and said they go against "everything he is and respects." The French actor was known for being in around 170 films starting back in 1973 with Les Valseuses (Going Places).
