Teen Will Face Charges For Sucker-Punch That Became Fatal

A Gainesville, Florida man was killed Saturday night after being sucker-punched during a dispute at an apartment complex. Sgt. Chris Sims of the Alachua County Sheriff's office says 50-year-old David Odenthal, Jr. and 17-year-old Jahaad Poole were fighting at Verdant Cover Apartments.

Sgt. Sims says during the dispute Poole asked his friends if he should punch the victim. That is when Poole sucker-punched Odenthal and he was knocked unconscious by the blow causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement in the process.

The victim went into "traumatic arrest" and emergency responders rushed him to UF Shands Hospital but he was pronounced dead that night. Alachua County Sheriff's have since arrested Poole and he has been charged with aggravated battery.

Sgt. Sims also said his office is discussing the case with the State Attorney's Office to decide if more charges will be introduced following Odenthal's death. Poole is currently in custody at the Juvenile Detention Center.
