India is being gripped by shock and indignation anew with the latest spate of sexual assaults, the latest of which involved a teenage girl burned alive after being raped.
The 16-year-old victim told her 26-year-old rapist after the crime that she would tell her family about the abuse she suffered. Before she can even run to her family’s protection, however, the man set her on fire, leading to her death due to burns.
Two other teenagers were also victims of rape a week earlier in Jharkhand state. One of the victims died while the other is in the hospital fighting for her life.
Police said that the latest victim happened to be alone at her home in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh state when she was raped. One of the suspects is even a cousin of the victim who informed the main suspect that she was alone in the house.
The main suspect is married with a child. Police have arrested the suspects.
The said most recent cases also happen to be some of the most high-profile incidences of rape since the 2012 infamous rape and murder of a student on a New Delhi bus. The said incident sparked mass protests and indignation rallies condemning not just the incident but India’s deplorable rape culture.
Indian authorities are now facing renewed pressure to decisively act on sexual assaults, including the brutal gang rape and killing of an eight-year-old Muslim girl in Jammu and Kashmir state which also triggered massive demonstrations.
The little girl’s body was left for three days in the forest after she was raped and killed. The girl’s heartless tormentors strangled her with her own scarf and bashed her in the head with a rock. More horrific is the fact that among the one juvenile and seven men-suspects, four are police officers.
