After 50 days of a caretaker government, President Emmanuel Macron appointed former Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier as France's new prime minister. Barnier, from the conservative Republicans (LR) party, takes on the challenge of leading a divided parliament.
Barnier, 73, previously served in several ministerial positions, including foreign affairs, European affairs, and agriculture, and was the EU's chief negotiator during the Brexit talks. Barnier’s main task is to form a government capable of surviving a no-confidence vote, amid a fractured parliament that emerged from elections earlier this year. Parliament is under pressure to submit a draft 2025 budget by October 1, as government finances face strain, with a predicted deficit of 5.6% of GDP this year.
Barnier’s appointment was met with mixed reactions. Jean-Luc Mélenchon of France Unbowed criticized the move, while Marine Le Pen's National Rally took a wait-and-see approach.
His experience as an EU commissioner and his hardline stance on immigration during a past presidential bid suggest a pragmatic path ahead.
