Ending the Cycle: Could U.S. Non-Involvement Bring Less War to the Middle East?

The recent assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah by an Israeli airstrike, hailed by President Biden as “a measure of justice” for the victims of Hezbollah's terrorism, underscores a disturbing reality about U.S. involvement in the region. While the U.S. continues to provide military aid to Israel, with over $12.5 billion sent since October 2023, this funding only perpetuates a cycle of violence that the United States should no longer fuel.

The justification for Nasrallah’s assassination, which Biden described as a victory for justice, cannot be separated from the fact that American-supplied weapons were used in the strike. Netanyahu’s government relied on these munitions, including "bunker-buster" bombs, to carry out the operation.

While Israeli leadership claims this will change the balance of power, it will only escalate the violence further. Iran, Hezbollah's backer, has been placed in a position where it must either retaliate or risk looking weak in the eyes of its allies.

More crucially, the United States' role in this conflict has become less about defending allies and more about enabling endless warfare. Despite Biden's calls for de-escalation, U.S. weapons and funding fuel Israeli actions that provoke retaliation from groups like Hezbollah. As long as the U.S. continues to support such operations, it is complicit in the war crimes and the devastation of civilian lives on all sides.

It is essential for the U.S. to step back and reevaluate its foreign policy. As one of the primary funders of these wars, the U.S. holds significant responsibility for the ongoing destruction in Lebanon, Gaza, and Israel. Without this external support, these conflicts would likely take a different course. It is time for the United States to stop being the financier of endless Middle Eastern wars. The cycle of violence, retaliation, and further escalation is directly tied to American involvement. Peace can never be achieved while the U.S. pays billions for war.
