Leftists Pivot to Job Cuts by Firing the Wrong People

Democrats are finally realizing that Americans approve of government downsizing—just not the way they expected. As everyday Americans cheer cuts to bloated bureaucracies and wasteful spending, leftist politicians like New York Governor Kathy Hochul have bizarrely decided that the best way to reduce government is to fire the workers that keep law and order.

On Monday, Hochul fired 2,000 corrections officers in New York State, officers who were striking for safer working conditions in the wake of rising prison violence. These officers were protesting dangerous work environments, days-long shifts, and the disastrous impact of the Democrat-backed Humane Alternatives to Long-Term Solitary Confinement (HALT) Act, which has empowered violent inmates at the expense of those tasked with keeping them in check.

Cutting the Wrong Workers

For years, leftists have been obsessed with their "Defund the Police" movement, despite crime spiraling out of control in cities across the country. Now, with their warped priorities, they see growing public support for slashing government fat and think the answer is… to cut law enforcement jobs?

At the same time that Hochul is axing 2,000 correctional officers, New York taxpayers are being forced to bankroll free housing, education, healthcare, and food for illegal immigrants. It’s the ultimate slap in the face to those who have risked their lives serving the state’s prison system.

Republican Representative Mike Lawler slammed Hochul’s move, calling it “a total failure of leadership.” Fellow Rep. Nick Langworthy is demanding a federal investigation into Hochul’s “harmful labor practices” after she not only fired these officers but also terminated health coverage for over 5,000 officers and their families—a move that has left children, pregnant wives, and even a cancer patient without medical care.

Prisons on the Brink

New York’s prisons were already suffering from extreme understaffing. Even before these terminations, the state was short by 2,000 officers. The last academy class graduated only 57 officers—a number so low that, at the current rate, it would take six years to replace the officers Hochul just fired.

With thousands of inmates now effectively left with reduced supervision, Hochul has had to call in the National Guard to staff the prisons. That’s right—she’s gutting the correctional system and replacing trained professionals with guardsmen who were never meant to take on this role.

Hochul and her leftist allies have sent a clear message: They don’t want to reduce the government’s power. They want to reduce public safety. When Americans talk about cutting waste, we mean useless bureaucrats, redundant agencies, and overpaid consultants—not police officers, prison guards, and first responders.

As crime spikes and lawlessness grows, Democrats seem to think their political survival depends on making Americans suffer. If that’s their game plan, they may want to rethink it before the next election.
