Times of economic difficulty, like those being felt globally in the wake of the pandemic, make this tactic even easier. In the case of Masih Alinejad major media sources like the New Yorker, New York Times and Washington Post initially point out that Alinejad is an activist and journalist without mentioning that she's funded hundreds of thousands of dollars to work for US government propaganda networks like Voice of America.
