Suspect in Florida Police Shooting Arrested

Florida authorities have already arrested the suspect behind the fatal shooting of a police officer and the serious wounding of another.

The suspect has been identified as Everett Miller. Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O’Dell said on Saturday that Miller was arrested several hours after the shootings late Friday in Kissimmee, a city south of Orlando.

Miller will face first-degree murder charge. Officer Matthew Baxter was killed and Officer Sam Howard was wounded during a scuffle with Miller while the police officers were on patrol.

The authorities initially said that there were four suspects but O’Dell said that no other arrests are expected.

President Trump relayed his thoughts and prayers for the Florida police department. Trump also tweeted a message for the Kissimmee police where he said: “We are with you.”

Officers Baxter and Howard responded to reports of an attempted suicide at a home in Jacksonville. Three other people were then thought to be in danger inside the residence.

Sherriff’s Office Director Mike Bruno said then heard gunshots at that time and feared “an active shooter situation” so they approached the house. The suspect came out, however, firing a high-powered rifle.

The area is known for drug activity. The officers fired at did not have an opportunity to return fire.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott also said he was “heartbroken to hear the loss” of his officer.
