Authorities in New Mexico say the Zimbabwean opposition leader Roy Bennett has been killed in a helicopter crash along with five others who were on board.
Lt. Elizabeth Armijo of the New Mexico State Police confirmed the deaths of Bennett and five others Thursday. The crash took place Wednesday when a helicopter carrying Bennett and five others went down in the mountains of rural northern New Mexico.
A spokesman for the MDC-T opposition party, Obert Gutu, said the tragic death of Bennett presented a great loss to the movement. Bennett was a white man who was fluent in Shona and drew the wrath of former President Robert Mugabe.
Bennette's wife, Heather, was also aboard the doomed flight and was one of the five other passengers killed in the crash. A sixth person was aboard who survived but sustained injuries.
The crash took place around 6 p.m. Wednesday near the Colorado state line but no other information has been released regarding the circumstances of the crash.
