19-year-old Nikolas Cruz appeared in court charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. Police reports state that he has since confessed to the shooting.
"Cruz stated that he was the gunman who entered the school campus armed with an AR-15 and began shooting students that he saw in the hallways and on the school grounds." according to the court document.

The attack which took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, is the deadliest US school shooting since 2012.

According to police reports Mr. Cruz was carrying extra ammunition in a black duffel bag and backpack. After the shooting, he discarded his weapon in an attempt to blend in and escape. Able to flee the scene undetected before entering a Walmart and then a McDonalds, Mr. Cruz was eventually spotted by police and arrested one hour after the attack.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said his social media accounts, as well as his interest in guns, were "very, very disturbing".

Two Instagram accounts of his purportedly show Mr. Cruz posing with guns and knives. They have since been deleted.
He posted a comment on a YouTube post last year in which he joked that he would one day be a ‘school shooter’.
