A violent knife attack has left a 22-year-old woman dead and a 77-year-old man wounded at a Winchester Public Library early Saturday morning. Authorities say 23-year-old Jeffrey Yao of Winchester was arrested at the scene of the crime and charged with murder. According to Yao's Facebook page, he is from Jinan, China.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said at a press conference Saturday afternoon Winchester police received "several" 911 calls at around 10:38 a.m. Saturday reporting a stabbing attack at the library. Fortunately, a police station is located nearby and officers responded "almost immediately" to the scene where they discovered two people suffering from stab wounds.

The assault began when Yao approached a 22-year-old woman who was seated at a library table "apparently studying or doing work" in a reading room near the library's main lobby. Yao snuck up behind the victim and began stabbing her with a 10-inch hunting knife, a deadly instrument.
"Mr. Yao began striking her with what we now know to be a — what appears to be a — hunting knife with approximately a 10-inch blade. She suffered a number of slash and stab wounds to the head and upper torso," according to DA Ryan. The woman tried to escape her attacker and fled toward the library's front lobby door.

"A number of patrons came to her aid. In attempting to do that, the 77-year-old man sustained stab wounds as well," Ryan said. Library staff attempted to intervene as well and patrons were able to corral Yao until police arrived and took him into custody. Winchester Police Chief Peter MacDonnell thanked the people who came to the woman's aid.
"I would like to thank all those people for their help during this incident, and I’d like to thank my officers, as well, for their quick response to this incident," MacDonnell said. Both victims were taken to local hospitals where the woman died of her injuries. Authorities have not released the identities of the victims citing the need to notify next of kin first.

The suspect was a local man named Jeffrey Yao and has been charged with murder and assault with intent to murder. Yao is being held without bail and is awaiting an arraignment Monday in Woburn District Court. Ryan added, "With respect to motive, possible knowledge of the parties of each other, that is all part of the early and ongoing investigation, which we’re conducting right now."
Ryan also added that Yao was known to police but could not confirm why. "We’ll have more information about that at his arraignment on Monday," Ryan said. Whenever a violent shooting takes place, the left is quick to call for gun control, yet when a violent knife attack occurs with an equally devastating result they do not call for "knife control".
