Hamburg – ISIS Supermarket Knifer Wanted To Kill Christians, Gets Life Imprisonment

Mr Ahmad Alhaw, a Palestinian militant who killed one man and wounded six other people in the German city of Hamburg last year, has been sentenced to life in prison.

According to Judge Mr Norbert Sakuth, he had become disillusioned with his life in Western Europe after having been deported when his asylum application was turned down, but the process was held up by a wait for his Gaza identity documents so he remained in Germany for one more year.

He had before that already been rejected for asylum in Norway, Sweden and Spain.

After his arrival in Germany in 2015 (when he was moved to a Hamburg migrant accommodation centre), he at first was very keen to learn the western lifestyle (he would drink alcohol and smoke marijuana), but when he saw propaganda videos of ISIS online, he grew deeply religious and increasingly distrustful of state authorities.

According to the court’s psychiatrist, by 2016 he understood the Quran completely, rejected all previous temptations, and started looking at all other people as either true believers or non-believers.

Then on 28 July last year, Mr Alhaw entered a local Hamburg supermarket, snatched an eight-inch knife from the shelves and used it to fatally stab a 50-year-old man.

Panic broke out in the store. He ran after people, slashed and stabbed at others whilst shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest). During the process he wounded a 50-year-old woman and four men.

Defence lawyer Mr Christoph Burchard claimed that his client "was in an unstable condition because of his life circumstances. I think he expected the verdict."
