Though the media is still warning of a global trade war looming around the corner, even before US President Trump signs off on tariffs on steel and aluminum imports (which he is expected to do today), the first result is already there.
US Steel CEO Mr David Burritt gave credit where credit was due: thanks to President Trump’s planned tariffs he will reopen a plant in Illinois and re-contact all workers.

Mr Burritt: “We’re really excited to be able to tell our employees in the community in Granite City, Illinois, that we will be calling back 500 employees.”
“Here we are working hard every day trying to get the thing back on track and we finally get some good news because we got some courageous leadership in the administration.”
“Big, big thanks to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and certainly President Trump for taking the leadership and righting some wrongs. It’s really important that we get this right, and now it’s finally happening.”
Reopening the plant will take four months, during which the company said it would restart two blast furnaces and steelmaking facilities. In total it will bring some 500 jobs back to the area.

Mr Trump’s base is bound to be pleased even though market analysts continue to claim that it might not be beneficial to global trade.
Press Secretary Sarah Sanders meanwhile reiterated President Trump’s proposal to offer deals to Canada and Mexico if they are willing: “We expect that the president will sign something by the end of the week. There are potential carve-outs for Mexico and Canada based on national security and possibly other countries as well based on that process.”
