The Dutch are quite proud of their open liberalism and accepting manner of all ways of life and relationships. Holland was one of the first countries to sign gay marriage into law and euthanasia has been accepted for about a decade. Abortion can be done anywhere in The Netherlands.
Hence, the Dutch were shocked to find that an advertising campaign by Amsterdam brand Suitsupply caused so much commotion over the past week.

Suitsupply is a Dutch fashion house which is best known for providing high quality men’s suits at reasonable prices and advertising via shockingly open sexist advertising. As it had featured men showing their sexual dominance over women in the past, no one in Holland was truly shocked.
But last week Suitsupply decided they needed something fresh to catch the attention of the Dutch (and the other European countries where they advertise. FYI, they tend to use different ads in different parts of the world as this wouldn’t fly in the United Arab Emirates for example).
Via social media and by renting out all bus stop billboards they advertised by showing two men kissing each other, albeit they were both nicely dressed in a suit.

Certainly in the more conservative north of Holland (Friesland) this caused quite the storm. Some 30 bus stops were vandalized, billboards broken down or the glass covers smashed.

On Sunday the Christian conservative party organized a protest march in Amsterdam in front of the company’s headquarters.
Yes, Holland is very liberal indeed. It’s just that there are limits to that as well and it looks like they found theirs now.
