Although one might think the Chinese be keen on a man whose policies are known beforehand, rumor has it the government in Beijing is not too fond of the appointment of Mr John Bolton as National Security Advisor, certainly not after having read that he had declared to other senior US officials he would gladly risk a war with China to push through his foreign policy goals.
Mr Bolton, who is keen on quoting the ancient Roman battle philosophy phrase “if you want peace, prepare for war”, is eager to challenge the one-China policy the US has over its relationship with Taiwan, which could further influence the US-Sino trade war.

Mr Lawrence Wilkerson, who was chief of staff to former US Secretary of State Colin Powell and once described Mr Bolton as "the most dangerous American" for US foreign security policy, said that he believed: "if Trump surprises me and does warm to Bolton, we are all in trouble, from North Korea to China."

Beijing’s fear over this matter is not totally ungrounded. Already in January last year, long before his nomination to the position of National Security Advisor, Mr Bolton wrote an editorial for the Wall Street Journal (right after Taiwanese President Ms Tsai Ing-wen had called then President-elect Donald Trump to congratulate him on his victory and Mr Trump did the unthinkable: actually pick up the phone from Taiwan).
Mr Bolton mocked the then sending of aircraft carrier Liaoning through the Strait of Taiwan by China as a sign for accepting the phone call, and claimed that under his leadership, the US would certainly “revisit the One China policy.”
Mr Bolton wrote: “Let us see how an increasingly belligerent China responds.”
