Mike Pompeo Met With NOKO Leader Kim Over Easter

It would appear that there has already been a high-level meeting between US officials and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, according to reports in the US media today.

CIA director Mike Pompeo, the current candidate for Secretary of State, travelled to Pyongyang for a secret meeting with the North Korean leader over the Easter weekend apparently, with the direct blessing of US President Donald Trump.

This would then mark the highest level US contact with North Korea since 2000.

Mr Trump himself broke the news when he hinted such a meeting had already taken place when informing reporters from Mar-A-Lago, where he is hosting Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, that NOKO-US Meetings had in fact already happened. Mr Trump said: "We have had direct talks at… extremely high levels."

Mr Pompeo's secret trip was thus the highest level meeting any North Korean leader has had with a US official of the highest order since 2000 when then-Secretary of State Ms Madeleine Albright, working for the Clinton administration, met Mr Kim Jong-il, the father of the current leader, in Pyongyang, North Korea.

During his confirmation hearing, when asked about the US relationship with North Korea, Mr Pompeo had said: “Just to be clear, my role as a diplomat is to make sure that we never get to a place where we have to confront the difficult situation in Korea that this country has been head for now for a couple of decades.”
