The Democrats are turning Texas into a test case for the nation by putting a Latino candidate upfront in a Republican state considered safe.
In the face of nationwide changing demographics, a female gay Latino sheriff is now going up against Governor Gregg Abbott, hence if you don’t vote for the Democrats, you’ll probably be designated as white, straight and given that you chose to vote against a gay Latino, we’re predicting that by the fall, the leftwing press might just portray you as a racist as well.

Ms Valdez told a jubilant crowd in a restaurant specialized in southern cuisine that “Texas is changing. Look all around you. This is what Texas looks like.”

Even though Ms Valdez's victory breaks a barrier, there is still an uphill struggle before she can mount a serious challenge to Governor Abbott in the fall.

The 70-year-old former Dallas County sheriff is quite the underdog going up against Mr Abbott but given the placing of their preferred candidate and the scare tactics that progressive Democratic candidates already encountered (see our related coverage), it is quite certain that the newspapers will start a long summer season of all things related to Ms Valdez’s career and the obstacles she faced getting to where she is now.

There was one black cloud over Ms Valdez victory though, as she lost support of several Hispanic activists over her record on immigration as Dallas sheriff and her lack of fundraising (mostly due to the fact that Democrats know she doesn’t stand a great chance against Abbott).
