Whereas we told you some two weeks ago that Swedes now worry about crime just as much as citizens from Peru, Mexico or Brazil (see our related coverage), it would seem that they have every reason to after a series of arson attacks by youth groups is sweeping the Scandinavian nation. The images and videos of youths masked in hoodies setting whole parking lots of expensive cars on fire till they explode has shocked the Swedes.
The anti-immigrant, Eurosceptic Sweden Democrats have been the only party warning about mass immigration and rising crime figures and the fear is that this week’s events will see their support surge even higher. Already in polls in June and July, they had topped election boards, before falling back in the last few weeks as debates started to heat up.

However, with every evening news now opening with more organized arson attacks and a clear crime spree crossing the northern country, Prime Minister, Stefan Löfven, who was asked about the incidents, is clearly losing his temper. Answered what he thought of the recent crime spree, he said: “This is really pissing me off. And my question to those who are doing this is: What the h*** are you doing?

The interviewer on Swedish radio went on to ask the Prime Minister, whose party has been in power for decades, whether he felt responsible, pointing out that similar events happened previously in his time as leader of the country: "There is no society that can say that there will be no crime at all. We have added more resources to the police than they required themselves.”
The worst came to light when videos emerged of the masked youth groups setting cars on fire in a residential parking lot in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second biggest city.
Scandal grew even further when it emerged that youngsters were throwing rocks at the police to keep the firefighters from putting out the fires.

Swedish police admitted there have also been gangs torching cars in Hjällbo, Malmö and Helsingborg later this week.

With the crime wave worsening, most of the focus of the election debate (Swedes vote on 9 September) has been on immigration, integration, and crime. The far-right Sweden Democrats, who are being shut from power by the other traditional parties, have proposed to restrict family reunification for immigrants, speed up deportations, improve care for the elderly, and fight criminal gangs with long prison sentences.
