Sen. Lankford: Comey’s Memo Leak ‘ Not Damaging to National Security’. We Say Think Again, Senator

Republican Senator James Lankford, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee said Sunday that former FBI Director James Comey’s leak of the memos giving details to his private meeting with President Donald Trump was “inappropriate”, but that “releasing his memos is not damaging to national security.”

Sen. Lankford said on him guesting on CBS’ “Face the Nation”: “I’m still wondering why he prospectively wanted to get out his side of his opinion.”

In his Senate testimony last week, ousted bureau chief Comey said that he leaked the memos through a friend to The New York Times after President Trump suggested he may have tapes of their private conversation. Comey further claimed that Trump ordered him to stop the investigation into his former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Comey also said that the President requested his loyalty. Trump denied the allegations of his former FBI Director whom he fired in May.

Senator Lankford also expressed doubts about the existence of tapes with the recordings of the private conversations between the President and Comey. The senator said: “I hope there are recordings. But I doubt that they’re really there.”

The senator said that Comey leaking the memos is “not damaging to national security” but surely the honorable lawmaker is aware that the office of the FBI which Comey leads at that time, and naturally his own job, are both highly sensitive entities which the American public should be able to fully, reliably trust and respect. If Comey could be reckless and imprudent with leaking such memos with only his personal agenda to think of, how sure is the American public- or anyone for that matter- that he was not as careless with other matters, with other cases under investigation at the time of his leadership? If he could have done it once, he could have done it on other matters, other times, only that this is the only one he admitted to. Had he stayed longer in office, who knows how he will also deal with other sensitive matters, most if not all cases of the FBI being naturally of sensitive and confidential nature? What other information has Comey leaked to his friends, and for what purpose?

Untrustworthy officials are always a threat to national security.
