50% of youth who live as sex workers are young boys who begin by the age of 15. According to the United States Department of Justice, somewhere between 100,000 and three million children are currently involved in prostition, child pornography and sex trafficking. There are multiple situations in play that lead to difficulty in gauging the extent of the horrors. Many of these children are under the care of multiple institutions such as criminal justice, child welfare, education system and others. Take into account the fact that many of these children are reticent to open up about their age, the nature of their exploitation as well which further obscures the details. Finally, and most tragically, there is simply no telling how many children remain unrecovered and in the grips of horrific exploitation.
