Trump Urges Death Penalty for ISIS-Loving NYC Terrorist

President Donald Trump has expressed his strong sentiment on the New York terror attack and posted a message on Twitter that he wants nothing short of a death penalty for the suspect behind the gruesome incident.

The President tweeted on Wednesday: “NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room. He killed 8 people, badly injured 12. SHOULD GET THE DEATH PENALTY!”

The President also added in follow-up tweets: “Would love to send the NYC terrorist to Guantanamo but statistically that process takes much longer than going through the Federal system.”

Trump then followed up with: “…There is also something appropriate about keeping him in the home of the horrible crime he committed. Should move fast. DEATH PENALTY!”

Trump’s tweet immediately received some responses, even from legal experts. There are those who expressed concern that Trump’s being vocal about wanting the death penalty for the victim might hurt the legal system’s ability to actually make the death penalty happen.

Trump also earlier aired his frustrations with the legal system as he said in a Cabinet meeting at the White House that the U.S. justice system “is a joke and a laughingstock.” He also called for “quicker” and “far greater” punishment for terror suspects.

New York is one of the states that no longer carry the death penalty as punishment. For the terrorist to be meted out the capital punishment would entail Trump charging him with a federal crime. The federal government, of course, has the death penalty.

Trump’s tweet of indignation against the terror suspect is triggered with the report that the suspect, 29-year-old Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov asked the hospital personnel if he could display the Islamic flag inside his hospital room. He said that he wanted to do it because he “felt good about what he had done.”

The Manhattan attack that took place on Tuesday involved a hired truck that was driven into a bike path. After the suspect crashed the truck into a school bus, he was shot in the abdomen by an NYPD officer and brought to a local hospital for surgery.

Federal prosecutors have charged Saipov on Wednesday with providing material support to ISIS and for violence and destruction of motor vehicles, which resulted to the deaths of 8 people while injuring a dozen more people.
