80's Metal Tune The Final Countdown Plays On Hacked North Korean Military Shortwave

You are now breathing manually. The Final Countdown is playing in your head and… you're in North Korea. On September 23, Strategic Sentinel reported on Twitter, "Radio Pyongyang has broadcasted coded messages on 6400kHz. Usually, when they do this it signals an upcoming provocation." In reality, it was a hacker who goes by the name of "The Jester." It was the Jester (th3 j3st3r) who initially reported exactly what the "coded signals" were. None other than the 80's rock classic by Europe.

Strategic Sentinel is a Washington based, non-partisan geostrategic consulting firm. They monitor transmissions like these to stay ahead of the curve.

“The most likely speculation for these messages is an upcoming missile test on the heels of #DPRK FM #UNGA statements,” was their opinion in September, just after North Korea announced it was considering a hydrogen bomb test.

They cited the fact that North Korea made broadcasts two days before conducting a nuclear test, one day before a ballistic missile test, and one day before Japanese flyovers.

North Korea is has been somewhat quiet recently, but still on an aggressive stance. They are allegedly feeling the burn of sanctions, however. Rumors that the North Korean army is forced to forage for their own rations and supplies. China has always been one of the main financial allies of the North Korean regime, but even China is forced more and more to distance itself from Kim Jong Un as the U.S. and the UN tighten up the sanctions against North Korea in the light of repeated threats of attacking.

The Jester is just the latest in the tradition of broadcast hijackers. In the 1980's in Chicago a hacker hijacked WGN and PBS stations on multiple occasions and appeared in the broadcast wearing a Max Headroom mask. To this day he has never been caught. The Jester has an esteemed hacking history that includes hacking several large targets such as 4chan, Wikileaks, the Russian government, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and assorted jihadist websites amongst other notable achievements. The Jester is described as a "gray hat" hacker. White hat hackers will never penetrate a system without permission. Black hat hackers will exploit a vulnerability to cause harm or steal data and gray hat hackers may enter a system without permission for ethical purposes such as whistleblowing.

Anon may remember the Jester as the hacker who doxxed Sabu. All this occurred around the time Anonymous was looking into Strategic Forecasting and the leaders of LulzSec were being rounded up along with journalists covering the story like Barrett Brown.
