Christmas came a week early for a woman who was rescued by a Good Samaritan, “Superman”, and Santa Claus wrapped in one when she was rescued and saved from being raped.
It all started with just an unexplained instinct of Taylor O’ Neill last Monday afternoon to take a different route to work. It proved crucial in saving a woman’s life.
A pickup truck stopped in the middle of the alley leading to O’ Neill’s job and it was blocking his way and preventing him from getting to work Monday afternoon so he says he honked his horn to get the driver’s attention, not knowing it was he who would catch something shocking instead. When his honks were ignored, he got out of the car to ask the driver to move and that’s when he saw the unexpected and enraging sight.
O’Neill said: “When I tapped on the window she looked up and I could see the duct tape on her face and the ear in her eyes.”
Sanat Ana Police credits O’ Neill timely interference as his tap at the window broke an attempted rape in progress. The 28’- year- old woman, who was being attacked, managed to jump out of the pickup truck.
O’ Neill narrated what he saw. He said: Äs soon as I walked up, knocked on the window, she had her mouth duct taped and he was on top of her in the passenger seat.”
The accidental ‘hero’ also happened to have his phone in his left hand and open up his camera to take photos of the culprit’s license plate as he drove off and immediately called 911.
Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department credits the information O’Neill provided with his account of what happened and the photos he took in tracking and arresting the suspect.
Police have identified the suspect as 27-year-old Jorge Alejandro Cruz de Armas. The authorities said the victim was then walking on 1st and Main Street when de Armas offered a ride to Wells Fargo in his truck. But instead of taking her to the bank, he drove her to the alley between Palm and 4th Street. Police say he then placed a duct tape over her mouth and tried to rape her. O’ Neill’s timely knock on the vehicle’s window stopped the suspect.
Police arrested Cruz de Armas for assault with intent to commit rape and other charges. They believe he has more victims and they’re asking anyone with information to contact Santa Ana Police Department.
In spite proving to be a hero to the woman’s life at a crucial moment she needed help to get out of a dangerous situation, O’ Neill downplays his huge act and says everyone in the same situation would have done the same thing.
However, in any one’s book, it’s still a big gesture and good deed on Christmas week.
