Mind control, psychic spies, portals to other worlds and stargates may sound like the stuff of science fiction, but as it turns out US tax dollars were funneled for years into this category of research. National Security researcher, Emma Best, writes at MuckRock about the concern of some Senators that the CIA's psychic program might be actually part of a mind control plot.

The CIA's Stargate program is a little known, but very interesting bit of intelligence history. It was Project STARGATE that resulted in Ouija boards being purchased for agency use as well as working with "spoonbender" Uri Gellar at one point. The CIA had released several previously classified files as part of their CREST release.

In a letter from Congressman Charlie Rose, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Evaluation, Rose expresses his concerns about the spy agencies dabbling in the arena of psychic phenomena.

<quote>“I am glad that this classified and I believe that it should stay classified.”</quote>

Rose's primary concern was that if the psychic program was part of the CIA's MK-Ultra mind control program “the rights of individuals were violated.” One reason for such suspicions is that the psychic program began exactly as the other had been shut down for human rights concerns after the Senate Church Committee hearings.

The letter explained how, as of yet, the Committee hadn't made “any determination to endorse the experimentation as valid or invalid, [but] it does find that continued activity in this field may offer promise in applications to intelligence problems.” Congressman Rose then scheduled a briefing from Doctors Puthoff and Targ, involved in the project. Dr. Puthoff had been involved in research in psychedelics like psilocybe mushrooms as well as psychic phenomena.

Congressman Rose also pointed out how the bizarre nature of a government's spy apparatus spending so much time and money on what amounts to so much "woo" in many persons eyes “would label such research more mind control experimentation.” Rose argued more than once that, as a result, any information about the psychic spy program should remain classified.

During the briefing it was pointed out how the Soviet Union's well-funded research in the subject may lead to a "psychic gap" if we did not continue our research. Those familiar with MK research will note that MK-Ultra was first formulated as defense against the possibilty of a Korean brainwashing campaign in the early 50's. That said, considering the creation of mind-controlled alters was already in use by Allied intelligence as early as WWII, Korea nor the Soviet Union were most likely not the entire impetus behind the desire for such capabilities.

Congress evidently offered their support behind closed session doors up until the early 1990s at least. Those interested in psychic phenomena will note that it was around the 1990s that the sort of Remote Viewing technology that was developed as part of this program would be released by Ingo Swann, Hemisync and others.
