President Donald Trump’s choice to lead the Immigration and Customs Enforcement strongly made a case on Tuesday and declared that politicians who lead so-called sanctuary cities should be charged with crimes and held “personally accountable” for shielding illegal immigrants from deportation.
ICE Acting Director Thomas Homan directly accused California of putting “politics ahead of safety.” He made such statement following Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown’s move to sign a bill declaring California a sanctuary state in October.
California would be the first state in the country to be such a sanctuary state and Gov. Brown was clear in saying his policy is really meant to “protect the illegal immigrants living in the shadows of society” and also to shield them from authorities.
Homan emphatically said that what Brown was trying to accomplish was “terrible.” He said: “We gotta take (sanctuary cities) to court and we gotta start charging some of these politicians with crimes.”
Homan also said that what California has done is to force his (federal) officers to arrest dangerous criminals under turf- in their homes, in their place of business rather than arresting them in the safety and security of county jails. Ridiculous! They’re knowingly and intentionally putting law enforcement at risk.”
The worst thing California is doing, further adds Homan, is putting American communities at risk when they release a public security threat back to the public. He says: “It’s just a foolish decision they made.”
He also asked the Department of Justice to hold such politicians “personally accountable” because they should be responsible for more citizens facing the prospect of deaths due to such policies favorable to criminal, illegal immigrants.
Homan said that if California refuses to protect its citizens, then federal agents would come in and do the job for Californians and keep them safe. He said: “The state of California better hang on tight.”
Homan vows that he will significantly increase the enforcement presence in California. He concludes: “If the politicians in California don’t want to protect their communities, then ICE will!”
