The rise of a popular Japanese porn star, Sola Aoi, led to her making millions of dollars and earning the distinction of "educating a generation of Chinese men in sex." The Japanese porn star has a literal army of fans in China where she rose to massive popularity earning her over 18 million followers on the Japanese social media platform Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter.

When the multi-millionaire porn star announced recently she was getting married, her fans on social media went crazy. "I’ve always wanted to get married. I love kids, and it’s always been my dream to start a family. So how did a single adult actress standing only 5 ft 1 in tall become so infamous? To start, Sola Aoi starred in over 90 adult films in the early 2000's before shifting her career into mainstream acting and pop singing in 2011. The multi-talented star developed an amazing following, mostly male fans, to whom she was known as "Teacher Sola" because she gave a generation of young men an "education in sex."

Perhaps part of the reason "Teacher Sola" rose to popularity is due to the fact that porn is illegal in the world's second-largest economy. To compound matters, sex education in China is lacking and basic at best. "I don’t regret making adult films, but it’s also not like I don’t feel any embarrassment about how such work is viewed by society," Aoi said.

The former adult star is now 34 and looking to start a family. "To create a family, you have to accept everything about each other, your past and future, so I think my husband is really an awesome guy for accepting me," Aoi explained. Teacher Sola isn't just popular on Weibo when she opened her Twitter account on April 11, 2010, her fans flocked to her using VPN's to get past the ban on Twitter in China.

Aoi has also taken steps to cultivate her image and immersed herself in Chinese culture, learning Mandarin and the art of calligraphy. She even went on to sell a piece of calligraphy art for 600,000 yuan, or $92,000. Prof Wai-ming Ng, of the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Department of Japanese Studies, says the massive movement behind the former porn star could be partly attributed to "globalization".

Prof Wai-ming Ng cited the borderless streams of social media that people move across as more reason why Aoi became so popular in China. "For people who like Sola Aoi, no matter which country they are from, they would all feel like they belong to the same group," he explained.

This common thread led to over 170,000 comments and 830,000 likes on Weibo in the first 48 hours after Aoi announced her engagement. Fans voiced their support saying, "You will always be my goddess … I wish you happiness" and "We grew up with your movies and will support you always."

The enormousness success of Sola Aoi is a stark contrast to others who came from the Japanese porn industry.
