‘America First’ Tariffs Imposed On Foreign Products

Another of President Trump’s groundbreaking promises has taken effect today when an ‘America first’ tariff was imposed on overseas products being shipped to the US homeland.

In what many expect will be a tough nut to crack for the authorities in Beijing, washing machines and solar panels from Asian making will be slapped with a tax.

For washing machines, the first 1.2 million imported devices per year will be met with a 20% tariff, any number above that will have a whopping 50% tariff slapped on them.

US company Whirlpool welcomed the move, having sought for years protection from previous administrations against cheap imports.Chairman Jeff Fettig claimed that "this announcement caps nearly a decade of litigation and will result in new manufacturing jobs in Ohio, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee."

For imported solar cells and modules, the tax would amount to 30% in the first year.

Chinese government spokesman Mr Wang Hejun stated that "together with other WTO members, China will resolutely defend its legitimate interests" adding that the plans "not only aroused the concern of many trading partners but was also strongly opposed by many local governments and downstream enterprises in the US".

South Korean manufacturers LG and Samsung, which both sell washing machines in the US, claimed they would consult with their government how to best react.

A spokesman for the White House explained this administration would "always defend American workers, farmers, ranchers, and businessmen".
