Gumm is survived by his wife and other family members, according to the Colorado Police Officers Foundation. He began serving with the sheriff's office in 2013. Authorities say one suspect is in custody and law enforcement officers are looking for two other suspects for the fatal shooting of deputy Gumm.

The gunmen are described as two light-skin black males or two dark-skin Hispanic males wearing all black. The shooting took place in the 8700 block of Dawson Street around 7 p.m. when deputies responded to an assault in progress call when a man brandished a handgun and opened fire on deputies.

One of the thugs was arrested in a shed in the backyard of a nearby home and taken into custody. A citizen in Adams County named Jeff Williams said, "I met officer Gumm. He patrolled our neighborhood and my friends and I watched the parking lot. He was kind as hell and shook our hands and thanked us for what we did."

"What he did is far greater than anything I can put into words. I'm so sorry, and thank you to his family," Williams said. Fellow police departments, as well as the FBI, voiced their support on Twitter.
